DETROIT, March 13, 2010 – Women Empowered, Council for Women with Physical Challenges and Tech Town have teamed together to offer a new entrepreneurship program for men and women living with disabilities in Metro Detroit. Six business workshops will be held from 12 - 2 p.m. on Tuesdays from March 23 through Oct. 26, 2010, at the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan. The program will cover a different business topic at each session, spanning from learning how to start a business to identifying funding opportunities and defining a budget. Tech Town will co-facilitate four out of the six workshops.
Of the 54 million disabled people living in America, approximately 70 percent do not work. “Men and women with disabilities have always been unemployed and underemployed, but given the state of Michigan's economy, we now have to compete with the rest of Americans that have lost their jobs.” said Tameka Citchen, president of Women Empowered. “The goal of this entrepreneurship series is to teach men and women to be economically self-sufficient.” The Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan is located at 261 Mack Ave., between John R. Street and St. Antoine Street in Detroit and the program will take place inside room 815.

Rochester, Mich., March 1, 2010 –To help give a voice to women with physical disabilities during National Women’s History Month, Women Empowered Inc., Council for Women with Physical Challenges is pleased to announce a new public forum, United Voices and Sharing Our Stories. The session will be held on Thursday, March 18 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Oakland University’s (OU) Oakland Center in Rochester, Mich.
The forum is sponsored by three OU Student Organizations: Students Toward Understanding Disabilities, the Women's Issues Forum and the Gender & Sexuality Center and it will be facilitated by Women Empowered Inc. A panel discussion will cover issues facing women with disabilities ranging from domestic violence to employment and health prevention to parenting, followed by an audience question and answer session.
“Since March is Women History Month, we want to recognize the 26 million women with disabilities living in America collectively as a group,” said Tameka Citchen, president of Women Empowered. “This event will give an opportunity for their voices to be heard and give society an insight into the joys and challenges of being a woman with a disability today.”
Now in its 30th year, having been expanded from one week to one month by the US Congress in 1987, the National Women’s History Month takes place in March. It was founded to increase awareness and knowledge of women's history and to remember the contributions of notable and ordinary women.
The Oakland Center is located at 2200 N. Squirrel Road between E. Walton Boulevard and University Drive and the forum will take place inside Gold room A.
