Women Empowered, Council for women with physical challenges started in September, 2007. The founder, Tameka Citchen, who was Ms. Wheelchair MI 2006, presented a platform speech at the national competition about Ending Abuse towards Women with Disabilities, in Little Rock, Arkansas. Fellow contestants liked the platform speech and the message resounded with them. One lady told Tameka, her husband put her on the couch, and her wheelchair on the other side of the room, so she couldn’t get to it. Tameka met many inspiring women in wheelchairs; so, she wanted to create awareness in MI about domestic violence towards women with disabilities. When she came back to Michigan, she met other women who wanted to talk about other issues; thus Women Empowered Council for Women with Physical Challenges was born. Women Empowered mission is to advocate, educate, and empower women with physical challenges to live their best life for themselves, their families, and communities.
The organization has two areas of focus, entrepreneuership and support group
